Northwest Mothers Milk Bank: Saving Babies Drop by Drop
NWMMB is a community-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Portland, Oregon.
Tax ID#: 26-3458029
What We Do:
- Collect breastmilk from screened donor mothers.
- Pasteurize and culture donated milk.
- Distribute frozen, pasteurized milk with a physician’s prescription to infants when their own mother’s milk is not available.
Why We Do It:
Breastmilk (including donor milk) increases the health and survival of babies. Research shows that especially for premature, ill and vulnerable infants, it shortens hospital stays and can prevent serious complications. When a mother’s own milk is not available, donor milk plays a vital role. Learn more about milk banking.
Who We Are:
We are a group of volunteers who came together to establish a human donor milk bank in the Northwest. Meet our Board and Staff.
How We Got Here:
In 2008, a passionate group of lactation professionals and interested community supporters met with one goal in mind: establish a human donor milk bank to serve the Northwest. These volunteers worked for 5 years to raise funds, gather community support, increase the use of donor milk and develop the infrastructure of a working milk bank. In July 2013, the Northwest Mothers Milk Bank officially opened its doors to accept milk donations and began pasteurizing and distributing milk.
NWMMB is a member milk bank of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA) and adheres to the HMBANA standards and guidelines for donor milk banking.
